"Is someone coming to get me?"

CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL ASCENT OF MOUNT EVEREST

Ben Coode-Adams and Kris Cohen

Presenting, in the Donald Cameron Hall Main Dining Room,
The Banff Centre, Alberta Canada:

A real-time continuous re-enactment of the first ascent by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay (29th May 1953) using a scaled model of Mt. Everest.

Alongside the crowning achievement of the Golden Age of Himalayan climbing and one of the last victories for the British Empire, we present a painstaking re-creation of the commercialised ascent of 32 climbers on May 10, 1996 that led to the deaths of 5 people.

These two events will be set against the Coronation of Elizabeth II which was so intimately linked to success on Everest in 1953. Lying beneath our Everest, Westminster Abbey is the stage for the ushering in of a new epoch. To illuminate the alchemical transformation of commoner to monarch we will slow down the process of coronation, extending it over 24 hours.

Beginning at 6pm on 28th May with the assembly of the models, the 1996 climbers will begin their ascent at 11.30pm. High on the South East Ridge Hillary and Tenzing will leave their bivouac at 6.30am, reaching the summit at 11.30am on 29th May. As they ascend the final ridge, the crown will descend on the head of Elizabeth. Anatoli Boukreev (1996) will summit at 1.07pm from which point disaster unfolds until dawn on 30th May.

See the performance in The Donald Cameron Hall Main Dining Room the Banff Centre, Banff, T1L 1H5 Alberta Canada (please avoid peak times in the dining room: Breakfast 7-8 am, Lunch 12-1:30pm, Dinner 6:00 - 7:30pm).

And track the events online at:

We will be documenting our preparations and posting live to this site during the performance. We welcome comments, recollections, questions and photos and will post these reactions on the site and the physical models up to and during the performance.
